RHINO on TOUR
A larger-than-life rhinoceros is making its way through Saxony-Anhalt. First stop: St Moritz Church in Halle (Saale).
At first glance, the white rhinoceros appears calm and almost harmless. But that is precisely what makes it so unsettling: it draws attention to social developments that often begin insidiously – conformity, authoritarian thinking and the question of how we, as a society, deal with them. In Hebrew, ‘rhinocerization’ essentially means opening oneself up to authoritarian ideas and unquestioningly going along with the opinions of others.
Inspired by Eugène Ionesco’s play "Rhinoceros", in which people gradually transform into rhinoceroses, the artwork serves as a reminder that democracy cannot be taken for granted, but thrives on vigilance, the ability to challenge the status quo and the courage to think for oneself – and what can be lost when indifference towards authoritarian developments grows.
With RHINO on TOUR, the artwork leaves the traditional museum setting and travels through Saxony-Anhalt. At various stops along the way, it creates space for encounters, conversations and new perspectives.
