Tiemann Prize 2024 goes to Saxony-Anhalt:
The Kunstmuseum Magdeburg receives the purchase budget of 50,000 euros
The Tiemann Prize 2024 was presented to the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg in a festive ceremony at the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg. Prof Dr Annegret Laabs, Director of the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, was delighted to receive the museum acquisition prize of 50,000 euros, which she has now used to purchase four works by the artist Özlem Altın.
‘The donation of the prize is an exemplary demonstration of the kind of social commitment that is so important for culture and art. This commitment strengthens contemporary art collections, which are of great importance as resonating spaces for the cultural diversity of our time. We would like to thank the donor couple for this important museum acquisition prize and hope that it will continue to exist for a long time to come,’ says Prof Dr Annegret Laabs, Director of the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg.
Özlem Altın's works can be seen at the Kunstmuseum from today. They are the two-panel painting Naked Eye (landscape) from 2023 and the two works Hieroglyph (transfer through touch) and Hieroglyph (mechanism) from 2019. The five-member jury, which is made up of experts in contemporary art, was impressed by the ‘versatile artistic practice, which spans photography, collages, painting and expansive installations’, according to the jury's statement.
This is the second time that the Tiemann couple have awarded the prize: ‘We are delighted that we are promoting contemporary art by living artists with the Tiemann Prize and also helping to make it better known. Especially in times when culture is being cut back, it is important to set a social example and support museums in acquiring works of art’
The prize is aimed at state museums, which can use it to expand their contemporary collection.
